Community Projects & Programs

Sight and Hearing

Vision support is a core value for Lions Clubs International since 1924 when Helen Keller asked the Lions to be ’Knights of the Blind.

We provide vision tests and glasses, at no cost, to members of our community who qualify financially. We provide hearing tests and hearing aids to members of our community who qualify financially.

We provide vision screening to the Oak Harbor School District to help them comply with State mandated testing of elementary students. We also support local and national eye banks though the White Canes Program.

For more information, or if you need glasses, call 360-320-7066. If you need hearing aids, call 360-320-0161

We build wheelchair ramps for members of our community of limited financial ability, at a reduced cost.  We never charge for our labor, so they only have to pay for the materials.

Highway Litter Pickup

Quarterly, we pickup litter on State Route 20, from Monroe Landing Road to Sidney Street, a distance of about four miles.  This project requires about 16 Lions to safely complete, and takes only about one hour.  After, we often gather at a local restaurant for breakfast.

If you would like more information about this project, or would like to join us, call 206-712-1652

Memorial Day Service of Remembrance

On Memorial Day each year, Oak Harbor Lions sponsor an annual Service of Remembrance to honor our fallen heroes of all branches of Military service.  This ceremony is co-hosted by Island County Cemetery District #1: Maple Leaf Cemetery in Oak Harbor, and by our local VFW, American Legion, and Fleet Reserve Associations.

We invite Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor NJROTC, Oak Harbor Fire and Police Departments, and local and state dignitaries to participate each year, and include guest speakers and musical presentations from members of our community as well.
